I got some questions to ask...
    1. For this poem, can we say that the subject matter is "This poem is about stuggling"?
    2. "They make, they serve, they buy, they sell" is it referring to daily lives of the settlers?
    3. "Have changed their gods, kept some memory of their race" means the people get together, e.g. married, so their religion change as well?
    4. What's the meaning of "in prayer, laughter, the way their women dress and greet" means?
    5. For trh last paragraph, what's the meaning of "surfeited"?

    Sorry for asking so much.
    JingYing here and thanks.

about a young nation struggling to forge a sense of belonging, national pride, identity... you must specify struggling about what?

    2. "They make, they serve, they buy, they sell" is it referring to daily lives of the settlers?
Yes. about the business end of their lives. more to do with their work and how they have built up singapore's economy.

    3. "Have changed their gods, kept some memory of their race" means the people get together, e.g. married, so their religion change as well?
Yes, but not just through marriage. Just by inter-mingling with people of other cultures, they would inevitably be some mix of cultures and religion. "kept some memory" suggests that part of the original culture/religion/heritage is preserved. So not all is lost - people who come from China and live here still can find some of their chinese heritage remaining.

    4. What's the meaning of "in prayer, laughter, the way their women dress and greet" means?
How the people of different social backgrounds come together in religion, to share their happiness or partake in leisure activities as well as social gatherings.

    5. For trh last paragraph, what's the meaning of "surfeited"?
In excess. go check out the dictionary meaning of 'surfeit'.

hope this helps. don't stop asking questions and never be sorry for doing so.

    Adding to the dragon, phoenix,
Garuda, naga those horses of the sun,

Is this trying to say that the merlion is like gonna be part of 'the family'(of legendary symbols)?

yes, something like that. In a sense elevating the Merlion to the same status as these mythical creatures that are soo rooted in Asian culture.

    dear DT,
I kept faith in Ithaca, travelled, travelled
what does thumboo means by how can ulysses keep faith in ithaca when he keeps travelling around? or does this has another meaning?

    Have changed their gods
    what does this statement mean?

Their spirits yearn again for images, adding to the dragon, pheonix, Garuda and naga those horses of the sun

why must the people's spirits yearn for images? and also adding to religions? i totally do not understand this statement.

    thanks thanks !

Ithaca is his ultimate destination - so he keeps faith in that. it is his ultimate goal and he must not forget that.

gods refer to religion, so people who come to singapore change their religions. could either mean a complete change, or more importantly, adapting religion to suit local cultures. buddhism in singapore is not the same as that in china/india.

we yearn for images because humans have an innate sense of spirituality and need religion to make sense of their existence perhaps? related to our self-construction of identity too.

What is the meaning of :

They hold the bright, the beautiful,
    Good ancestral dreams
    Within new visions,
    So shinging, urgent
    Full of what is now.

What does the ancestral dreams refer to?

Does it refer to the dream of a strong nation?

Within new visions : the visions of the government to make the ancestral dreams com true?

What is the meaning of shinging. and what does the last sentence mean?
